Top 5 Must-Have Upgrades for Your Motorhome

Are you new to motorhoming and looking to enhance your travel experience? Well, you're in luck! In this blog post, I'm looking at the top five motorhome upgrades that can make your adventures more enjoyable and comfortable.

1. Alarm and Tracker System for Peace of Mind

When you invest in a motorhome, whether it's brand new or secondhand, your first priority should be doing whatever you can to protect it. Consider installing a high-quality alarm and tracker system, preferably one with a Cat 1 rating. This isn't only for peace of mind, but some insurance companies offer discounts for having an alarm fitted. It's not just about deterring theft, it's about making your motorhome less appealing to potential thieves.

2. Motorhome Wi-Fi for Connectivity on the Go

I use the Netgear Nighthawk Router

Staying connected on the road is important for a whole host of needs from streaming to keeping in contact with loved ones. A basic Motorhome Wi-Fi system will consist of a router and often a roof-mounted antenna that boosts your signal to help you access Wi-Fi almost anywhere when travelling. The router will require a SIM card so look out for great data only deals. That could either be a pre-paid sim plan or a monthly contract, depending on how long you travel for and the amount of data you need.

Personally, I have a Netgear Nighthawk as I need to upload and download quite a lot of data for work and for my YouTube channel.

While they might not be the cheapest upgrade, having reliable internet access in your motorhome can make all the difference.

3. Awnings for Comfort and Shade

Awnings are a motorhome meet-up's best friend, especially with the varied weather we have in the UK. In the summer, they provide shade and when its raining, no one will be more popular than the person with an awning for everyone to hide under.

An awning is a fantastic addition to your motorhome. Jon (& Rosie!) from Life Beyond Bricks pictured here

Most awnings are attached to the van so be sure to choose a company who can properly fit it. There are some freestanding options, which is handy if you don't fancy drilling holes in your van or if you're parked on uneven terrain. Don't let the weather dictate your trip; invest in a quality awning.

4. Double Rear-View Camera for Safety and Manoeuvring

Safety should always be a top priority when driving your motorhome. Having a rear view camera is a must, especially if you have a particularly long vehicle as visibility when reversing or parking with the wing mirrors alone can be difficult. Even more so because most campervans and motorhomes will not have a rear view mirror.

A double rear-view camera system, with one camera facing outward and one pointing downward, will significantly improve your visibility. Make sure your reversing camera is wired to work while you're driving, then it acts as your rearview mirror and helps with overtaking.

5. Miscellaneous Essentials for Convenience

Beyond the major upgrades, don't forget about the small yet essential accessories that can make life on the road more convenient. Consider investing in:

  • Flat Hose: Opt for a shrinking expandable hose that takes up minimal space when not in use but can reach up to a hundred feet when extended. Its also a good idea to invest in a selection of hose adapters to make sure you can always easily fill up with water.
  • Electrical Cable: A 25-meter electrical cable with various ends and protective measures can keep your motorhome powered and safe from surges.
  • Levelling ramps: If your motorhome lacks a levelling system, quality levellers, like these Froli ones, are a must. They ensure you stay level and comfortable no matter where you park. Make sure to get ones that are rated for the weight of your motorhome or campervan.

These miscellaneous items might not be glamorous upgrades, but they're invaluable for maintaining your motorhome's functionality and comfort.

Remember that customization is key—choose upgrades that align with your needs and preferences. Now it's your turn: what are your top five dream motorhome upgrades? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
